What is Laughter Yoga?
Many people ask me "What is laughter yoga?" Is it holding the downward dog pose while laughing hysterically? Is it telling jokes to one another while holding the warrior pose? Are we stretching our bodies and making funny faces at one another?
The answer to these and other similar questions is no. It is actually much more fun than that!
Laughter yoga is the unique idea that anybody can laugh for no reason at all. Laughter yoga combines the deep breathing practice from yoga with unique laughter exercises to encourage healthy, hearty, sustained laughter in all participants. Using eye contact in a group setting, participants mingle about performing laughter exercises like "cell phone laughter", "lion laughter", or "milkshake laughter".
In between these exercises the group does deep breathing exercises to bring more fresh oxygen into their bodies.
The laughter may feel forced at first but it soon gives way to authentic laughter. And even if not, participants are still receiving the same health benefits.
The goal in laughter yoga is to get ourselves in touch with our childlike playfulness and to promote a joyful spirit. With this in mind, it is an exercise that is ideally suited for any"body"!
